Machinery and Chemical Industries Corporation Museum of Industry and Technology

Machinery and Chemical Industries Corporation (MKEK) Museum of Industry and Technology was established to make visible Türkiye’s industrial history and particularly the contributions of the Machinery and Chemical Industries Corporation to the country’s industrialization process. The museum collects preserves researches and exhibits artifacts documents and objects related to industry and engineering. It opened to the public on 22 May 2013.

History of the Machinery and Chemical Industries Corporation

The origins of the Machinery and Chemical Industries Corporation trace back to the Tophane-i Amire established during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Over time this institution underwent several name changes: in 1832 it became the Tophane-i Amire Müşirliği in 1908 the Tophane-i Amire Nazırlığı in 1909 the İmalat-ı Harbiye Müdüriyet-i Umumiyesi and in 1921 the Askeri Fabrikalar Umum Müdürlüğü. It adopted its current name in 1950. During the War of Independence the corporation produced and repaired military munitions and in subsequent years expanded into the production of civilian goods. It also played a key role in establishing major industrial enterprises such as the Turkish Tractor Factory and Tofaş Automobile Factory.

Museum Building and Location

The museum building was constructed at the end of the 19th century as a Cavalry Barracks and was used as a weapons workshop during the War of Independence. After a fire in 1922 it was restored and officially opened in the presence of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. From 1920 to 2013 it served as an administrative building for various directorates under MKEK. The museum is located within the MKEK General Directorate complex in Tandoğan Ankara.

Collection and Exhibited Artifacts

The museum’s collection comprises 1268 items. Exhibits include artifacts from the Tophane-i Amire İmalat-ı Harbiye War of Independence Askeri Fabrikalar and MKEK periods. Portraits of MKEK administrators are displayed at the entrance while exhibition halls feature firearms and munitions from the Ottoman and Republican eras lathes drills presses shell production machines civilian products such as batteries electric meters and gas stoves and various industrial tools. The museum also houses rare photographs from the War of Independence and archival copies of the MKE Haberleri newspaper.

Outdoor Exhibition

The museum’s outdoor exhibition area features naval mines locomotives and mine wagons produced for mining operations tractors construction machinery anti-aircraft guns and iron and steel processing machines. One of the most notable exhibits is a section cut from the main gun barrel of the Yavuz (Goben) armored ship which played a significant role for the Ottoman State during the First World War.
