National Arab Orchestra

The National Arab Orchestra is a non-profit musical organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the classical and contemporary traditions of Arab music. It was founded in 2009 in Detroit, Michigan, by Syrian-American musician and conductor Michael Ibrahim and officially began operations in 2010. The orchestra's mission is to sustain and disseminate Arab art and culture through education, community interaction, and performances.

Before the establishment of the National Arab Orchestra by music director Michael Ibrahim in 2009, it operated under the name "Michigan Arab Orchestra" as a small-scale ensemble. This initial formation took the shape of a takht (Arab chamber music ensemble) based on traditional Arab instruments. The takht ensemble included instruments such as the oud, qanun, ney, violin, and riqq, focusing on the classical forms of Arab music.

Initially conducting local and smaller-scale concerts, the group underwent structural transformation over time under Michael Ibrahim’s artistic direction. The repertoire was expanded both in instrumental diversity and the musical genres performed. During this process, the ensemble evolved into a larger and more comprehensive orchestra that incorporated not only traditional music but also symphonic arrangements. As part of this development, the ensemble’s name was changed to the "National Arab Orchestra," establishing an identity that performs both nationally across America and internationally.

The National Arab Orchestra consists of three main musical units that aim to perform Arab music in various formats. This structure allows the orchestra to present its broad repertoire, which includes both traditional and contemporary music styles, to the audience.

• Orchestra: This unit forms the main musical body of the institution. It is structured as a full symphonic entity, performing not only classical Arab music but also modern compositions. The ensemble includes traditional Arab instruments as well as strings, winds, and percussion from Western classical music. This blend provides a rich stage presentation featuring both authentic Arab music and orchestral adaptations.
• Takht Ensemble: Established in 2010, this ensemble represents the traditional performance style of Arab music. Historically, the takht involved a small number of musicians, with a repertoire composed mainly of makam-based classical Arab music works. Instruments such as the oud, qanun, ney, violin, and riqq are frequently included in this ensemble. Performances consist of both instrumental and vocal pieces, with traditional interpretation techniques taking precedence.
• Community Choir: Formed with the participation of community members interested in music, this choir imbues Arab music with a participatory and communal aspect by performing traditional Arab songs through choral arrangements. Participation in the choir is voluntary and open to amateur and semi-professional musicians. Choir performances serve as a supportive element in the orchestra's concerts.

The orchestra’s musicianship is not limited to artists of Arab descent; it also includes musicians from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This diversity ensures an artistic approach open to intercultural dialogue. Additionally, both professional musicians and university-level music students have the opportunity to gain stage experience by participating in various units of the orchestra.

This program introduces young individuals to the fundamental elements of Arab music, encouraging them to understand cultural diversity through music and broadening their artistic expression possibilities. The primary target audience for the program is elementary and high school students, but sometimes special events for high school and university-level students are also organized.

The education content focuses on fundamental topics such as the makam system in Arab music, rhythmic structures, traditional instruments (oud, ney, qanun, etc.), and song forms. The program provides theoretical knowledge and enables experiential learning through workshops, live performances, and participatory applications.

Events are typically conducted in collaboration with schools, and in some cases, members of the orchestra meet directly with young people in classrooms or community centers, providing educational demonstrations. This approach offers students the opportunity to directly interact with musicians and experience Arab music firsthand.

The orchestra has organized various concerts and events across the United States. Some notable events include:

Renowned artists, such as Lebanese artist Abeer Nehme, have performed as guests at these events.

The founder and artistic director of the National Arab Orchestra is Michael Ibrahim. Born to a Syrian immigrant family in Detroit, he began his musical education with the oud and later focused on the ney and bassoon. He has served in various roles as both a performer and educator in several music institutions. The orchestra benefits from the support of various public and private entities to sustain its operations. Organizations such as the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts are among these supporters. The funding aids in concert organization, educational activities, and community projects.
