Population of Türkiye (2024) refers to the statistics that reveal the size, demographic structure, age distribution, settlement patterns, and population density of the population residing in Türkiye, based on official results published using the Address-Based Population Registration System as of 31 December 2024. As of 31 December 2024, the population residing in Türkiye increased by 292,567 compared to the previous year, reaching 85,664,944.

As of 2024, males constitute 50.02% of Türkiye’s population (42,853,110), while females account for 49.98% (42,811,834). The annual population growth rate rose from 1.1 per thousand in 2023 to 3.4 per thousand in 2024.

Major cities have experienced significant demographic changes. Istanbul’s population increased by 45,678 compared to the previous year, reaching 15,701,602. 18.3% of Türkiye’s population resides in Istanbul. Istanbul is followed by Ankara (5,864,049), İzmir (4,493,242), Bursa (3,238,618) and Antalya (2,722,103).

The provinces with the smallest populations are Bayburt (83,676), Tunceli (86,612), Ardahan (91,354), Gümüşhane (142,617) and Kilis (156,739).

The proportion of the population living in provincial and district centers in Türkiye is calculated at 93.4%, while the proportion living in towns and villages has decreased to 6.6%. This situation indicates a continuous rise in urbanization. According to the new urban-rural classification, 67.2% of Türkiye’s population lives in areas defined as “dense urban”, 15.5% in “moderate urban”, and 17.2% in “rural” areas.

Analysis of Türkiye’s age structure reveals an increase in the elderly population due to declining fertility rates and increased life expectancy. Türkiye’s median age has risen to 34.4. This value is 33.7 for males and 35.2 for females.

In terms of provincial median age distribution, Sinop (43.4 years) has the highest median age, while Şanlıurfa (21.4 years) has the youngest population. Among males, Sinop (42.5 years) has the highest and Şanlıurfa (21.0 years) the lowest median age. Among females, Sinop (44.3 years) has the highest and Şanlıurfa (21.9 years) the lowest median age.

When comparing 2009 and 2024, the proportion of never-married males is higher, while the proportion of widowed and divorced females is greater.

Working-age population, defined as those aged 15–64, constitutes 68.4% of the total population. The proportion of the population aged 0–14 has declined to 20.9%, while the proportion aged 65 and over has increased to 10.6%. Türkiye’s total dependency ratio is calculated at 46.1%.

The foreign population residing in Türkiye decreased by 89,996 to 1,480,547. Of the foreign population, 48.3% are male and 51.7% are female. However, foreigners with short-term residence permits of less than 90 days and Syrians under temporary protection are not included in this figure.

The number of people per square kilometer (population density) in Türkiye is calculated at 111. The province with the highest population density is Istanbul (2,934 persons/km²), while the lowest density is recorded in Tunceli (11 persons/km²). Konya, the largest province by area, has a population density of 59 persons/km². Following Istanbul, the provinces with the highest population densities are Kocaeli (623 persons/km²) and Yalova (390 persons/km²).

Türkiye’s population reached 85,664,944 as of 2024. While the rate of urbanization continues to rise, the rural population is declining. The proportion of the elderly population is increasing and the median age is rising, indicating a shift in demographic structure. The foreign population has decreased, while population growth continues in some major cities.

According to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on 1 October 2025, Türkiye’s population in 2025 is 85,980,654. This figure represents the total population calculated based on the Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS). Türkiye’s total population increased by 315,710 compared to 2024.^【1】As of 2025, the male population is 43,003,770 and the female population is 42,976,884.

As of 1 October 2025, the total population consists of 43,003,770 males and 42,976,884 females. The population shows a highly balanced gender distribution, with the proportions of males and females nearly equal (each gender constitutes approximately half of the total population).

As of the same date, the population is distributed across age groups as follows: 4,888,337 individuals (5.7% of the total population) are aged 0–4, 6,216,510 (7.2%) are aged 5–9, and 6,508,063 (7.6%) are aged 10–14. Thus, the 0–14 age group constitutes approximately one-fifth of the total population.

Population density is higher in the middle-age groups considered to be of working age. There are 6,610,078 individuals (7.7%) aged 25–29, 6,317,388 (7.3%) aged 30–34, 6,282,280 (7.3%) aged 35–39, and 6,471,117 (7.5%) aged 40–44. When considered collectively, the 15–64 age group accounts for more than two-thirds of the total population.

In older age groups, the population gradually declines. There are 3,437,745 individuals (4.0%) aged 65–69, 2,531,542 (2.9%) aged 70–74, 1,778,233 (2.1%) aged 75–79, 982,451 (1.1%) aged 80–84, 503,577 (0.6%) aged 85–89, and 246,847 (0.3%) aged 90 and over. Based on these figures, the population aged 65 and over constitutes approximately one-tenth of the total population.
