Sinop Flax Museum

Sinop Linen Museum is Türkiye’s first museum dedicated to linen, located in the Ayancık district of Sinop province, with the aim of preserving the traditional linen production and weaving culture. It was revitalized as part of the cultural heritage through the restoration of the Kuş Üzümü Konağı, a 19th-century building that had remained abandoned for many years.

Establishment and Purpose

The museum opened in 2024 with support from the Northern Anatolia Development Agency (KUZKA) and the Turkish Republic Sinop Provincial Special Administration. Its founding objectives are to document the historical processes of Ayancık linen production, revive forgotten traditional weaving practices, promote local handicrafts and encourage rural tourism.

Architecture and Restoration

The museum building is the historic Kuş Üzümü Konağı, dating from the 19th century. The structure was restored while preserving its original fabric and adapted to meet modern museum standards. The restoration efforts aimed to safeguard architectural heritage while creating a functional cultural space.

Exhibition Content and Collection

The museum presents the cultivation, processing and weaving of linen in thematic sections. Major exhibits include:

• Flax seeds and cultivation
• Methods of fiber extraction
• Traditional linen weaving looms
• Examples of clothing and household textiles made from linen fabric

Visitors are also offered the opportunity to create their own patterns and experience their designs through interactive digital areas.

Ayancık Linen and Its History

Ayancık linen has been used for centuries by the local population as a primary textile raw material. Production remained active until the 1990s but gradually declined due to industrialization and the widespread adoption of synthetic fibers. By the 2000s, production had ceased entirely. In 2017, Ayancık linen fabric was officially registered with a geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.

Educational and Cultural Transmission Activities

In addition to its exhibitions, the museum seeks to revive traditional weaving through workshops, educational programs, local handicraft courses and design-focused workshops using contemporary methods. In this regard, the museum functions as both an educational and a production center.
