Topuk Plateau and Reservoir

Topuk Plateau and Lake is a nature tourism destination located within the boundaries of the Kaynaşlı district in Düzce Province, in the Western Black Sea region, recognized as a high-altitude forested area integrated into a wetland ecosystem. With its rich forest flora and infrastructure suitable for various nature-based sports throughout the year, Topuk Plateau stands as an exemplary site for recreational and sustainable tourism.

Geographical Location and Accessibility

Topuk Plateau is situated approximately 38 kilometers from the center of Düzce and about 10 kilometers from the center of Kaynaşlı district. Access is provided via the D-100 Highway, turning toward Bıçkıyanı Village after the Kaynaşlı exit. The road leading to the plateau also connects it to other natural sites such as Abant Lake, Sinekli Plateau, Samandere Waterfall, and Odayeri Plateau.

Elevation, Climate, and Natural Features

Topuk Plateau lies at an elevation of approximately 1,280 to 1,300 meters and falls within the influence of the Black Sea climate zone. The area offers ideal conditions for hiking and camping throughout the four seasons, characterized by consistently moist and cool weather. The forest cover includes dense stands of Turkish pine, oriental beech, hornbeam, and alder; this combination of deciduous and coniferous tree species contributes significantly to the region’s ecological diversity.

Ecological and Recreational Role of Topuk Lake

Topuk Lake, located within the plateau, is an artificial water body fed by mountain springs and integrated harmoniously into the local ecosystem. The lake serves as a habitat for both waterfowl and freshwater fish species. Fish such as mirror carp, tench, and Dutch bream make the lake attractive to amateur anglers. The lake’s surroundings are also actively used for water-based recreational activities including cycling, hiking, and paddleboarding.

Nature Sports, Camping, and Trekking Opportunities

The plateau and its lake surroundings offer a landscape well-suited for activities such as hiking, camping, cycling, photography, and relaxation along the lakeshore. According to the hiking trail guide published by the Düzce Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the Topuk Plateau route is 12 kilometers long, of moderate difficulty, and open to hikers in all seasons.

Development of Facilities and Infrastructure

In 2011, the Topuk Plateau Resort & Sport hotel was constructed by Fenerbahçe Sports Club and represents one of the region’s best examples of environmentally integrated development. Built with wooden architecture, the facility offers professional football fields, fitness areas, hiking trails, and cycling circuits. This structure enables athletes to conduct training camps and enhances the appeal of plateau tourism not only for individuals but also at an institutional level.

Paddle-Boarding Initiative and Expansion of Sports Tourism

In 2022, a paddle-boarding activity was organized at Topuk Lake through collaboration between the Düzce Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism and local stakeholders. This initiative serves as a pilot project demonstrating the lake’s potential for sporting water activities. It also stands as one of the key efforts to implement Düzce’s four-season tourism vision in practice.
