TEI TS1400 is a turboshaft engine originally developed by Turkey. It is designed primarily for use in various helicopter platforms, notably the T625 GÖKBEY utility helicopter. Developed by TUSAŞ Engine Industries Inc. (TEI) under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries of Turkey, the TS1400 is a high-performance engine undergoing certification processes. It has been produced to meet the domestic engine needs of Turkey’s defense and aerospace industries.

Development Process and Project Information
The Turboshaft Engine Development Project (TMGP) was initiated on 8 March 2017, aiming to develop domestic engine technology and reduce foreign dependency. Within the scope of the project, the TS1400 engine was designed and tested by TEI engineers at engineering offices located in Eskişehir, Ankara, and Istanbul. The engine has a takeoff power of 1,400 shp, and its power was increased up to 1,740 horsepower during rigorous endurance and power limit tests.
Performance and Usage
The TS1400 turboshaft engine is designed to provide the necessary thrust power for the T625 GÖKBEY utility helicopter under challenging climatic and geographic conditions. The engine features a high power output capacity for emergency takeoffs and has been developed for both military and civilian aviation missions.
Prototype engines have reached the maturity level required for manned flight tests and have been delivered to Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TUSAŞ). The TS1400 is integrated and used with the GÖKBEY helicopter, which has a maximum takeoff weight of 6 tons, a passenger capacity of 12, a top speed of 306 km/h, a service ceiling of 20,000 feet, and an endurance of over 3.8 hours. With the addition of external fuel tanks, the helicopter can remain airborne for over 5 hours and achieve a range of 948 kilometers.
First Flight with the GÖKBEY Helicopter
The TS1400 turboshaft engine demonstrated successful performance during test flights with Turkey’s indigenous general-purpose T625 GÖKBEY helicopter. This advancement was announced by İsmail Demir, then President of the Presidency of Defense Industries, marking a significant technical milestone in domestic aviation engine technologies.
The engine has been developed to be suitable for various operational scenarios such as transport, VIP transportation, cargo delivery, air ambulance services, search and rescue operations, and offshore logistics missions. Accordingly, the TS1400 serves as a domestically produced power system with technical features compatible with both civilian and military aviation applications.
