World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is an international observance celebrated annually on 21 May. This day emphasizes the richness of world cultures and the essential role of intercultural dialogue in achieving peace and sustainable development. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this day in 2002, based on the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity adopted by UNESCO in 2001. The Declaration defines cultural diversity as a necessity for humanity, comparable in importance to biological diversity.

History

In 2001, the UNESCO General Conference adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, establishing at the international level the role of culture in processes of peaceful coexistence and development. The Declaration underscored that cultural diversity is part of the common heritage of humanity and must be preserved. In 2002, the United Nations General Assembly, through resolution 57/249, proclaimed 21 May as the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.^【1】

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations in 2015, further highlighted the role of cultural diversity in achieving sustainable development goals. The same year, in December, resolution A/C.2/70/L.59 on Culture and Sustainable Development emphasized that cultural diversity is an integral part of development.
