Zonguldak City Forest

Zonguldak The Zonguldak Urban Forest encompasses the characteristic features of the Western Black Sea forest ecosystem. The area is rich in native tree species; oak, hornbeam, chestnut and plane trees form the natural canopy. The vegetation maintains its seasonal vitality throughout the year, and due to the humid climate of the region, biological diversity is at a high level. This natural structure provides both ecological and aesthetic respite for the people of Zonguldak. It is well suited for passive recreational activities such as birdwatching, nature photography and plant observation.

Recreational Use and Functional Zones

The most distinctive feature of the Zonguldak Urban Forest is its balanced approach to conservation and public use. The area includes the following functional zones:

• Walking Paths: Designed with wooden boardwalks that follow the natural topography, these paths facilitate movement through the forest and enhance interaction with nature.
• Viewing Terraces: Platforms positioned at specific elevations offer visual experiences of the Zonguldak landscape and the Black Sea horizon.
• Children’s Play Areas: Sections equipped with wooden play equipment providing safe spaces for families to spend time with their children.
• Camping Areas: Accommodation facilities integrated into the forest boundaries, allowing visitors to experience nature in a harmonious setting.
• Pond and Wooden Bridge: Wetland areas and crossing bridges installed to enhance landscape integrity and aesthetic appeal.
• Rain Shelter: Designed to protect visitors from the rapidly changing Black Sea climate conditions.

Infrastructure Development and Planning Activities

Comprehensive environmental improvement initiatives launched by the Zonguldak Municipality after 2020 aimed to strengthen the physical infrastructure of the area. These efforts included:

• Construction of walking paths designed to avoid damage to the soil substrate,
• Placement of viewing terraces taking into account the natural topography,
• Addition of seating areas, lighting systems and directional signage.

As part of projects announced to the public in 2021, the construction of miniature social use units known as “hobbit houses” was planned within the forest. These structures were designed as aesthetically and thematically engaging, environmentally compatible buildings, becoming an attractive feature for children and young visitors.

Technical Monitoring and Process Evaluation

In 2025, Zonguldak Mayor Tahsin Erdem and his technical team conducted a comprehensive assessment of the Urban Forest, evaluating the feasibility of projects, visitor comfort and environmental impacts. As a result of this evaluation, decisions were made to establish additional social facilities in existing areas, extend internal forest pathways, and update the signage system.

Socio-Cultural Contribution and Urban Ecology

The green space function of the Urban Forest serves as a natural balancing element within Zonguldak’s urban structure. Located immediately outside the city center, which is under pressure from concrete development and high-density construction, this area contributes positively to air quality and is regarded as one of the city’s belt-like green corridors. Additionally, it provides multifaceted benefits including public health improvement, promotion of physical activity and enhanced environmental awareness.
