Plot

Hababam Sınıfı Sınıfta Kaldı tells the story of the rowdy students in Class 6A at Özel Çamlıca Lisesi who, after forging diplomas to appear as if they had graduated, are forced to repeat the year and embark on new adventures. In an attempt to cheer up their teacher Mahmut Hoca (Münir Özkul) while he is in the hospital, the students create fake diplomas, only to face strict discipline upon his return to school. Meanwhile, Damat Ferit (Tarık Akan) brings his newborn baby to school, causing fresh chaos in the classroom. On another front, İnek Şaban (Kemal Sunal) misinterprets a letter from the new teacher Semra Öğretmen (Semra Özdamar) as a love letter, triggering a chain of misunderstandings. The film offers a humorous critique of the education system while exploring themes of friendship, family, and miscommunication.

Production

Hababam Sınıfı Sınıfta Kaldı was filmed in Istanbul in 1975. The screenplay, written by Sadık Şendil and inspired by Rıfat Ilgaz’s novel, presents a more original story than the first film. Produced and directed by Ertem Eğilmez under Arzu Film’s production approach, the movie achieved a strong balance of humor and emotion despite its low budget. Filming took place largely at Adile Sultan Kasrı and various schools across Istanbul, authentically capturing the atmosphere of 1970s Turkish high schools. Cinematographer Hüseyin Özşahin’s natural and colorful visuals support the film’s cheerful tone. The music, composed by Melih Kibar, includes the iconic “Hababam Sınıfı Marşı,” which remains a signature element of the series.

Thematic Structure

Critique of the Education System: The film offers a humorous critique of rote and rigid education. The students’ attempt to deceive the system with forged diplomas raises questions about formalism and superficiality in education. Mahmut Hoca’s disciplined yet paternal demeanor underscores the idea that true education is possible through compassion.

Friendship and Family: The solidarity among the students and Ferit’s bond with his newborn child form the emotional core of the film. The classroom functions as a family, uniting to overcome challenges and delivering a heartfelt message about friendship.

Misunderstandings and Humor: The series of misunderstandings surrounding Şaban’s misinterpretation of Semra Öğretmen’s letter forms the comedic backbone of the film. These absurd situations reflect the social dynamics of the era with wit and highlight the human side of the characters.

Release and Reception

Hababam Sınıfı Sınıfta Kaldı premiered in Türkiye in 1976 and attracted a large audience from its initial screenings. With approximately two million viewers at the box office, it became one of the most-watched films in the series. Critics praised the film, particularly Kemal Sunal’s performance as İnek Şaban, Şener Şen’s portrayal of Badi Ekrem, and the film’s fluid humor. However, some critics noted that the story lacked the depth of the first film. Over time, it has become a classic of Turkish cinema, leaving a lasting mark on popular culture through its memorable lines (“You’ve become as foolish as a donkey!”) and iconic scenes. It continues to reach wide audiences on television and digital platforms.

Hababam Sınıfı Sınıfta Kaldı did not win any official awards in 1976 but has been widely recognized by Turkish audiences as one of the most beloved comedy films. It has since been honored in various retrospectives for its contributions to Turkish cinema history.
