Göynük Zafer Kulesi

Göynük Zafer Kulesi (Clock Tower), a monumental tower located in the Cuma Neighborhood of Göynük District, Bolu Province. The structure is situated on parcel 1 of parcel group 51, atop a hill dominating the district. It was erected in commemoration of the success at the Battle of Sakarya and the victories achieved during the War of Independence.

Construction Process and Purpose

The tower was commissioned in 1922 by Hurşit Bey, the District Governor of Göynük. Its purpose was to honor the triumph at the Battle of Sakarya and to immortalize the achievements of the War of Independence. As a structure built after the National Struggle, it belongs to a group of monumental commemorative buildings that emerged in the post-independence period.

Architectural Features

Göynük Zafer Kulesi is a three-story structure built on a hexagonal stone foundation. Its wooden body follows a hexagonal plan and tapers upward. Each floor is equipped with a balustrade. The tower is crowned with a hexagonal conical roof. Due to its elevated position dominating the district, it occupies a prominent place within the settlement’s silhouette.

Conservation Status and Inventory Information

The structure is registered in the cultural inventory with inventory number “10.” It was officially recorded by the Ankara Council for the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage on 11 July 2008 under decision no. 3334. The inventory record notes the absence of electrical, water, and heating infrastructure.^【1】

The district of Göynük has been officially designated as an “urban conservation area” by the Ankara Council for the Conservation of Cultural Assets due to the integrity of its built fabric.^【2】 The district contains other significant monumental structures such as the tower. Göynük Zafer Kulesi is situated within this historic urban fabric and occupies a commanding position over the district.
