Akçatepe, the actor of cinema, television, and theater, was born on 1 January 1938 in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul, the son of Sıtkı Akçatepe, known for his role as “Paşa Nuri” in the “Hababam Sınıfı” films, and Leman Akçatepe, who successfully portrayed “mother” roles in Yeşilçam films.
Growing up in an artistic family environment exposed him to stage and camera work at an early age, laying the foundation for his professional orientation during childhood.
The eldest of two brothers, Akçatepe made his acting debut at the age of five in 1942 with a role in the film “Nasreddin Hoca Düğünde.” He later joined the Children’s Section of the Istanbul City Theatres and appeared in nearly forty productions as a child actor until he reached the age of fifteen.
The successful actor received his education at Yeşilköy Pansiyonlu Primary School, Refik Halit Karay School, and Saint Benoit French High School. After studying for one year at the Sultanahmet Academy of Economics and Commerce, he completed his military service as a reserve officer in Ankara in 1959. Following his military duty, Akçatepe enrolled in law school for two years but instead of attending classes, he joined the student theater group at the university and performed in numerous plays as an amateur actor. He later joined the cast of Muammer Karaca’s theater and began studying social anthropology at the Faculty of Letters during the same period.
The actor married twice. His first marriage in 1963 was to Tülin Akçatepe, with whom he had two daughters, Itır (born 1964) and Ebru (born 1968). After divorcing Tülin in 1981, Akçatepe married Rezzan Akçatepe in 1999, with whom he had a daughter, Günsu, born in 2001. Halit Akçatepe and Rezzan Akçatepe divorced in 2009.
Halit Akçatepe began his professional theater career in 1960 with the play “Sel” at Oda Theatre and worked with Zeki Alasya, Metin Akpınar, and Kemal Sunal at Devekuşu Kabare. In the 1971 film “Üç Arkadaş,” directed by Memduh Ün, he acted alongside Kadir İnanır and Hülya Koçyiğit, and it was during this period that he met Ertem Eğilmez.
The accomplished actor gained wider recognition through the 1972 film “Tatlı Dillim,” in which he acted alongside his daughters Itır and Ebru, children of his first wife Tülin Akçatepe. Known as one of Yeşilçam’s most beloved faces, both for his humor and his charm, Akçatepe won public affection through his roles as Güdük Necmi in “Hababam Sınıfı,” Ramazan in “Süt Kardeşler,” and in films such as “Beyoğlu Güzeli,” “Üç Sevgili,” “Sev Kardeşim,” “Tatlı Dillim,” “Köyden İndim Şehre,” “Mavi Boncuk,” and “Ah Nerede.”
A favorite actor in Ertem Eğilmez’s films, Akçatepe stated in an interview that he learned much from Eğilmez: “I was a contracted actor at Arzu Film. We would gather at the company to work on the scripts we were going to shoot. We would discuss the scripts. I would sometimes make coffee for Ertem abi. When someone suggested an actor, Ertem abi never paid attention to recommendations like ‘He’s a great actor, definitely cast him.’ Even if it were the best actor in the world, it did not matter. What mattered was whether the actor could perform convincingly in a small scene and then be seen by the audience. It did not matter how handsome or beautiful he looked on screen. He would observe the performance and decide whether to cast the actor in his next film.” 【1】
In emotional comedies, Akçatepe portrayed character roles throughout his career, appearing in over seventy films, numerous theater plays, and advertisements. He played the character “Güdük Necmi” in the 1975 film “Hababam Sınıfı,” adapted from Umur Bugay’s screenplay and Rıfat Ilgaz’s novel, and later left Arzu Film to join Genco Erkal’s Dostlar Tiyatrosu.
From the 1990s onward, Akçatepe acted in television series such as “Şaban Askerde,” “Kaygısızlar,” “Yazlıkçılar,” and “Bizimkiler.” He also appeared in the television series “Babam Sınıfta Kaldı” and the film “Karaman’ın Koyunu.” He wrote the screenplays for the films “Şaban Pabucu Yarım,” “Gurbetçi Şaban,” and “Şoför Memet,” and his final acting role was in the 2014 film “Karaman’ın Koyunu.”
