Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a twin-engine, tandem-rotor heavy-lift helicopter used for troop transport, artillery deployment, and battlefield resupply. Named after the Chinook people, a Native American tribe from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, the aircraft has served as the U.S. Army’s primary heavy-lift platform since the Vietnam War. Designed to replace the Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave, the Chinook was developed in the early 1960s and remains in production today, making it one of the two military aircraft with the longest continuous service history alongside the C-130. 【1】

Development and History

Helicopter development began in 1958, with the first flight occurring in 1961. Originally developed by Vertol Aircraft Corporation, the aircraft became part of Boeing following its acquisition in 1960. Initially designated as the Vertol Model 107 or V-107, the design entered service in August 1962 under the CH-47A designation with a gross weight capacity of 33,000 pounds (approximately 15 tons). 【2】The “CH” designation stands for “Cargo Helicopter.” The Chinook was among the first helicopters powered by turbine engines, alongside the UH-1 Huey, and has undergone a series of modernizations since the Vietnam War to enhance its lifting capacity and flight suitability in combat environments. 【3】【4】

Design and Technical Specifications

The CH-47 Chinook features a tandem rotor configuration with two three-bladed rotors mounted at the front and rear of the fuselage. Each rotor has a diameter of 18.3 meters.【5】【6】This design enables the helicopter to achieve high speeds and offers impressive lifting capacity compared to other aircraft in its class. The helicopter is powered by two Honeywell T55 series turboshaft engines; the modern T55-GA-714A engines used in current variants improve fuel efficiency and significantly enhance lifting performance.

The fuselage length is 15.6 meters, and the total length with rotating rotors is 30.1 meters. 【7】Its empty weight varies between 10,185 kg and 12,100 kg depending on the model, while its maximum takeoff weight reaches 22,680 kg (50,000 pounds) for the CH-47F model and 24,494 kg (54,000 pounds) for the Block II configuration.【8】【9】The fuselage design includes multiple doors, a wide rear loading ramp, and a triple-hook system for external load transport. This hook system ensures secure load attachment and extends tandem load capacity to 25,000 pounds (approximately 11.3 tons). Additionally, self-sealing fuel tanks are mounted within external fairings along the fuselage sides.

Operational Capabilities and Performance

CH-47F Chinook can reach a maximum speed of 315 km/h (170 knots), making it one of the fastest military helicopters in the world.【10】Its cruise speed is approximately 291 km/h (157 knots), and its mission radius ranges from 306 to 370 km. The helicopter’s service ceiling is 20,000 feet (6,096 meters), a critical feature for operations in mountainous terrain.【11】

In terms of payload capacity, the Chinook can carry over 10,000 kg internally or externally. Depending on cabin configuration, it can transport 33 to 55 fully equipped troops or 24 stretchers and three attendants during medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) missions. 【12】【13】Thanks to its rear ramp, the helicopter can perform water landings (with water dam configuration) and execute “pinnacle landings,” balancing on its rear wheels at the edge of a cliff to disembark personnel.

Modernization and Variants

The Chinook platform has been updated through multiple variants over time. The CH-47D model, produced between 1982 and 1994, featured composite rotor blades, upgraded electrical systems, and modular hydraulics. The current primary variant, the CH-47F, incorporates a new monolithic fuselage structure to reduce vibration and a digital cockpit with the Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS). These digital systems and the Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS) enhance flight safety in low-visibility or adverse weather conditions.【14】

The specialized variant developed for special operations, the MH-47G, is equipped with in-flight refueling capability and advanced mission systems. Additionally, a commercial version known as the Boeing-Vertol Model 234 is used for civilian purposes such as forestry, construction, and firefighting. The latest upgrade package, Block II, aims to further increase lifting capacity and range through a strengthened fuselage, redesigned fuel tanks, and improved transmission systems.

Use in Türkiye

The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) have integrated CH-47F Chinook helicopters into their inventory to meet heavy-lift transport requirements. A total of 11 helicopters were ordered beginning in 2016 for use by the Land Forces Command and the Special Forces Command. The Chinooks in Turkish service play an active role in personnel transport, heavy weapons and ammunition delivery, as well as disaster relief operations and search-and-rescue missions.【15】These helicopters in TSK service are reported to have a payload capacity of 12,700 kg or the ability to carry 55 fully equipped troops.
