Lala Mustafa Paşa Camii is a historical structure from the 16th century Ottoman period located at the intersection of Cumhuriyet Caddesi and Menderes Caddesi in the Yakutiye district of Erzurum. It is the first mosque built during the Ottoman Empire’s period of dominance in Erzurum and served as a model for other Ottoman mosques in the region. 【1】

History and Endowment Records

Built in 1562 during the tenure of Lala Mustafa Paşa, commander of Suleiman the Magnificent and governor of Erzurum, the mosque was commissioned by Lala Mustafa Paşa himself, the conqueror of Cyprus. According to historical records, the design is attributed to Mimar Sinan; a team was sent from Istanbul to oversee construction, though it is noted that Mimar Sinan did not personally participate in the building process. 【2】

Originally constructed as part of a külliye that included a palace (Paşa Sarayı), a bathhouse, a fountain, and a primary school, only the bathhouse survives today. The bathhouse, located east of the mosque, is now known as Lala Paşa Hamamı. A muvakkithane was added between 1836 and 1839 but has not survived to the present day.

Above the western mihrab in the current prayer hall, a firman issued by Sultan Mehmed IV in 1670 is inscribed on marble plaques. 【3】 This firman granted various tax exemptions to the people of Erzurum. Located in an active seismic zone, the structure has undergone nine distinct repairs and renovations throughout its history.

Architectural Features

Lala Mustafa Paşa Camii belongs to the group of centrally domed, square-plan mosques. Architecturally, it is considered a smaller-scale version of the plan type used in Istanbul’s Şehzade and Sultan Ahmet mosques. 【4】

Exterior Architecture and Minaret

The main walls of the mosque are approximately 180 cm thick. On the northern façade, a secondary prayer space with pointed arches and five small domes rests on columns with muqarnas capitals. The minaret is cylindrical and single-balconied, constructed from white stone and decorated with red-stone bracelets.

Interior Space and Roof System

The central dome rests on four octagonal stone piers. The main dome, approximately 13 meters in diameter and 17.45 meters high, 【5】 is supported by four pointed arches on each side, half-cross vaults, and four smaller domes at the corners. The interior is illuminated by a total of 28 windows. 【6】 The tiles on the window lintels were damaged by bullets fired during Russian occupations. On the eastern wall of the harem section, a plaque inscribed in riq'a script by Hattat Suûd’ul-Mevlevî recounts the life of Lala Mustafa Paşa.
