Relationships and Fracture with the Trump Administration

Elon Musk was one of Donald Trump’s largest financial backers in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Following the election, he was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an unofficial body established by Trump to reduce government spending. Musk held this position until May 2025, during which he worked to secure significant cuts to federal expenditures.

Musk’s break with the Trump administration began in June 2025 when he publicly opposed the comprehensive tax cut and spending law passed by Congress, which became known in public discourse as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” Musk argued that the law would drive the U.S. economy to bankruptcy and declared his intent to target members of Congress who supported it. The law was signed by Trump on July 4, 2025.

On July 5, 2025, Elon Musk announced the American Party in a post on the X platform. The date of the announcement coincided with the immediate aftermath of Independence Day celebrations in the United States. In his post, Musk stated, “Today, the American Party is being launched to return your freedom to you.” The day before the announcement, Musk conducted a poll on X with 1.25 million participants, approximately 65 percent of whom voted in favor of creating a new political party.

Musk described the purpose of the American Party as offering an independent political alternative to the existing two-party system composed of the Democratic and Republican parties. He argued that the current system had effectively become a “one-party system” and no longer served the will of the people.

Political Goals and Planned Areas of Influence

In its initial phase, the American Party is planned to focus on key seats in the U.S. Congress rather than building a comprehensive national organization. In his X posts, Musk stated that his initial goal is to gain influence in two to three Senate seats and eight to ten House of Representatives districts. According to Musk, given the current delicate balance in Congress, securing this number of seats would grant the party decisive voting power on major legislation.

In the United States, political parties are required to register with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) only when they raise or spend specific amounts of money related to federal elections. It has been reported that the American Party has not yet formally registered with the FEC. Following Musk’s announcement, various individuals and groups have filed applications with the FEC under similar names, but it has not been confirmed whether any of these are official initiatives linked to Musk.

Reactions from the Trump Administration

President Donald Trump characterized Musk’s announcement of the American Party as “ridiculous.” Trump noted that third parties have never succeeded in U.S. politics and that such efforts only lead to chaos. He also criticized Musk’s plan to end tax incentives and expressed disapproval of Musk’s close associate Jared Isaacman being nominated for leadership of NASA.

The Trump administration also indicated that billions of dollars in public support provided to Musk’s companies could be reviewed and that Musk’s legal status as a U.S. citizen might be reevaluated.
