Conflict Between the Syrian Army and the SDF in Aleppo and Limited Operation (2026), 6–9 January 2026, covers the military clashes that occurred in the center of Aleppo between the Syrian Army and elements of the terrorist organization PKK/YPG, operating under the name “Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF),” as well as the limited operation launched in response to these clashes.
The events were concentrated in the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maksud, Ashrafiyya, Beni Zayd, Meydan, Surian and Bustan al-Basha. The clashes began on 6 January 2026 with attacks by the SDF against civilian settlements in the city center.
On 8 January 2026 the Syrian Army launched limited point operations against PKK/YPG positions in Aleppo. With the start of the operation, a curfew was declared in the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maksud, Ashrafiyya and Beni Zayd. By 9 January 2026 Syrian Army units had largely secured control over the neighborhoods of Ashrafiyya and Beni Zayd. Following this development, a process was initiated to evacuate members of the terrorist organization to the east of the Euphrates River.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense granted the group’s elements a time window between 03:00 and 09:00 to leave the area and stated that they would be permitted to exit armed only with individual light weapons. The evacuation process was conducted under the supervision of the Syrian Army and in coordination with internal security units.
During the attacks and the operation, official institutions in Aleppo ceased operations, education at schools and universities was suspended, and flights at Aleppo International Airport were halted. According to official Syrian government data, at least nine people were killed and 55 injured during the four days from the start of the operation until the completion of the evacuation. During the same period, 142,000 civilians were evacuated to safe areas. According to the Aleppo Central Intervention Committee, 80 transport vehicles were deployed and a total of 12 temporary shelters were established in Aleppo, Azaz and Afrin. The process concluded on 9 January 2026 with the Syrian Army having largely regained control of the center of Aleppo and SDF elements being relocated to the northeast regions.
Beginning of the Attacks (6 January 2026)
Attacks in the Center of Aleppo
On 6 January 2026, elements of the terrorist organization PKK/YPG launched coordinated attacks targeting the center of Aleppo. According to information reported by the Syrian state television channel Al-Ihbariyya, four people were killed during the day’s attacks, including three civilians and one security officer, and 15 civilians, including nine children, were injured.
During the attacks, two women were killed in the Meydan neighborhood and one child was injured. On the same day at midday, in the Sheikh Maksud neighborhood, an armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack targeting Syrian Army positions resulted in the death of one soldier.
Additionally, the PKK/YPG terrorist organization launched an attack on Zahi Azrak Hospital in the Bustan al-Basha neighborhood. In the evening, the Al-Kalima School in the New Surian neighborhood became the target of artillery fire. It was reported that no students were present in the school during the attack.
Administrative and Transportation Measures in the City
Following the attacks, the Aleppo–Azaz road was closed to traffic for security reasons. Aleppo Governor Azzam Garip, in a statement on his social media account, said, “Due to the current situation and the Syrian Democratic Forces' bombing of hospitals and institutions, official working hours will be suspended tomorrow.” On the same day, all flights at Aleppo International Airport were suspended for 24 hours, and it was announced that flights would be redirected to Damascus International Airport.
Conflict Zones
By the evening of 6 January 2026, the Syrian Army had sent dozens of tanks, armored personnel carriers and reinforcements to the areas around Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya. During the same hours, sounds of heavy weapons fire were heard around Ashrafiyya and Sheikh Maksud. It was reported that official institutions in the city center had halted operations, education at schools had been suspended, and the Syrian Army had begun preparations for the evacuation of civilians.
Expansion of the Conflict (7 January 2026)
On 7 January 2026, early in the morning, elements of the terrorist organization PKK/YPG initiated a new bombardment targeting civilian areas in the northern neighborhoods of Aleppo: Sheikh Maksud, Ashrafiyya and Surian. Artillery fire was heavily directed at these neighborhoods during the attacks.
According to reports published by SANA, “The SDF organization is preventing civilians living in Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya from reaching the two humanitarian corridors opened by the Syrian Army for safe passage.”
The Aleppo Directorate of Health announced that four civilians were killed and 18 injured as a result of the attacks. According to the Syrian official news agency, three civilians were killed in the attacks on 6 January and one additional civilian was killed in the morning attacks on 7 January, bringing the total civilian death toll to four.
Humanitarian Corridors and Evacuation Operations
The Syrian Army declared the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya as closed military zones and opened two humanitarian corridors on the same day. These corridors were established in the areas of Al-Avarid and Al-Zuhur Street. The Syrian Civil Defense announced at 12:30 on 7 January that “850 civilians have been evacuated from Aleppo as of 12:30.” The evacuation operations were conducted in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
Obstruction of Civilian Movement and Firing
According to reports in the Syrian press, Alikhbariya TV stated that “SDF forces opened fire on civilians attempting to leave Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya.” The same report indicated that the SDF was preventing civilians from reaching the humanitarian corridors opened by the army and that the humanitarian corridor on Al-Zuhur Street had come under artillery fire.
On the morning of 7 January, the Syrian Army engaged in clashes with SDF elements along the Castello and al-Shayhan lines. On the same day, SANA reported that “the Syrian Army responded to fire originating from positions around Sheikh Maksud.” State media also reported that the army had designated SDF positions in Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya as “legitimate targets.”
Military and Administrative Measures by the Syrian Army
Declaration of Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya as “Closed Military Zones”
On 7 January 2026, the Syrian Army Operations Command announced that the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya in Aleppo would be declared “closed military zones” as of 15:00. The statement issued by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) indicated that this decision was taken for the safety of civilians. According to the statement, civilians living near the two areas were requested to leave through designated corridors and to stay away from SDF positions.
Designation of Positions as “Legitimate Targets”
The Syrian official news agency SANA reported that the Syrian Army Operations Command had designated SDF positions in Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya as “legitimate targets.” The report stated, “The Syrian Army, noting that the SDF has carried out massacres across the governorate, has declared SDF positions in Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiyya as ‘legitimate targets.’”
The Syrian Army’s statement further indicated that “the two neighborhoods would be declared closed military zones after noon, a complete movement ban would be enforced, and civilians would be required to stay away from SDF positions.”
Ministry of Information Statement
On 7 January 2026, the Syrian Ministry of Information stated, “In response to the ongoing attacks by the Syrian Democratic Forces against civilian settlements, main roads and security forces, the Syrian Army will launch a limited military operation in Aleppo.” The statement emphasized that the operation would be conducted based on a local decision and at the request of the people of Aleppo, with the objectives of “halting ongoing artillery, sniper and UAV attacks, restoring security, reopening the Aleppo–Azaz road, and protecting civilians.”
Legal Framework of Military Operations
The Syrian Ministry of Information’s statement emphasized that the operation would be conducted in accordance with international law. It stated, “Military activities will be carried out in compliance with international law, with priority given to the evacuation of civilians. The operation will target armed groups responsible for the attacks, not civilians.”
Ministry of Interior and Security Measures
On 7 January, the Syrian Ministry of Interior stated that security forces had taken emergency measures in areas affected by the clashes “to protect civilians following bombardments targeting civilian neighborhoods.” The ministry announced that, as part of these measures, security cordons had been established in affected areas, evacuations had been organized, and humanitarian corridors had been opened.
In its official briefing, the Syrian Army stated that the primary objectives of the operation were neutralizing sources of attack, securing humanitarian corridors, and completing the evacuation of civilians. It further emphasized that the operation was being implemented on the basis of a “local decision” and initiated at the direct request of the people of Aleppo.
