Erzurum Nene Hatun Historical National Park

Erzurum Nene Hatun Historical National Park is a protected area located within the boundaries of the Aziziye district in Erzurum province, Türkiye, notable for both its natural and historical significance. It was declared a national park in 2009 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The park holds special status in terms of historical and cultural heritage due to its inclusion of the Aziziye Redoubt, which played a significant role in the 1877–1878 Russo-Turkish War (93 Harbi), and the memorial tomb of Nene Hatun.

The national park is approximately 5 km from the center of Erzurum city. Access is easily provided via road. Due to its high elevation and continental climate characteristics, the park experiences harsh winter conditions. During winter months, heavy snowfall covers the park in white, enhancing its natural appeal and attracting visitors.

One of the most important elements of the national park is the Aziziye Redoubt, which became a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Erzurum during the Russo-Turkish War. This structure holds significant historical value both as a military strategy site and as a repository of collective memory. The tomb and monument of Nene Hatun within the park are preserved as symbols of national resistance and are open to the public.

Scientific studies have revealed the presence of a prominent steppe flora in the park’s surroundings. According to research projects conducted by scientists from Erzurum Technical University and Atatürk University, various herbaceous and shrub species native to the region have been observed within the park area. Although the floristic diversity is limited, the presence of certain endemic species adapted to alpine climatic conditions is noteworthy.

The national park is managed under the supervision of the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks. Various projects are underway to restore historical structures and preserve natural areas. In addition, in collaboration with the Erzurum Governorship and relevant ministries, promotional activities for the park have been extended to digital platforms using virtual reality technologies.

The national park is open year-round to individual visitors and student groups. Information boards, interpretation points, and digital guide applications within the area provide visitors with historical knowledge. Additionally, ceremonies and events held on special occasions highlight the region’s significance in the national memory.
