Dr. Zahi Hawass (d. 1947, Abeedya, Damietta yakınları, Mısır) modern Mısırbilim camiasının tanınmış ve üretken isimlerinden biridir. Arkeolog, eski eser yöneticisi, yazar ve kamuya dönük bir kültür elçisi olarak eğitim, saha çalışmaları, kurumsal reformlar, yayıncılık, medya çalışmaları ve kültürel miras iadesi (repatriation) mücadeleleriyle tanınır.

Erken Yaşam, Eğitim ve Mesleki Başlangıç (1947–1990)

Zahi Hawass, 1947 yılında Damietta yakınlarındaki küçük bir köy olan Abeedya’da dünyaya gelmiştir. Gençlik döneminde avukat olmayı planlamış; 15 yaşında hukuk eğitimine başlamış, ancak bu alanı sıkıcı bulduğu için kısa süre içinde arkeolojiye yönelmiştir. 1967 yılında, 20 yaşında iken İskenderiye Üniversitesi Arkeoloji Bölümü’nden (Yunan ve Roma Arkeolojisi) lisans diplomasını almıştır.

Mezuniyetinin ardından devlet tarafından yürütülen “mezunlara iş sağlama” programı kapsamında Eski Eserler Dairesi’ne (Antiquities Service) atanmış ve burada müfettiş (Inspector of Antiquities) olarak göreve başlamıştır. Diplomasi, Kültür Bakanlığı Sinema Bölümü ve Turizm Bakanlığı’ndaki kısa süreli denemelerin ardından yeniden saha çalışmalarına dönmüş; kazı ve restorasyon alanlarında deneyim kazanmıştır.

1969–1974 yılları arasında Tuna el-Gebel, Minya (Sikh Abada), Edfu-Esna, Abydos ve İskenderiye’nin batı Deltası gibi bölgelerde müfettiş olarak görev yapmıştır. 1970 yılında Batı Delta Bölgesi’nin; 1972–1974 arasında Embaba ve Giza bölgelerinin; 1973–1974’te Abu Simbel’in; 1974’te Malkata (Luxor) Pennsylvania ekspedisyonunun; 1974–1975 yıllarında ise Boston Güzel Sanatlar Müzesi’nin Giza çalışmasının müfettişliğini yürütmüştür.

1974–1979 yılları arasında Giza Piramitleri, Embaba ve Bahariya Ovası’nın Birinci Müfettişi (First Inspector) olarak görev yapmıştır. 1979 yılında Kahire Üniversitesi’nden Egyptology diploması almış, 1980 yılında Giza Piramitleri Başmüfettişi (Chief Inspector of the Giza Pyramids) olmuştur. Aynı yıl Fulbright bursu kazanarak Pennsylvania Üniversitesi’ne kabul edilmiştir. 1983 yılında yüksek lisans, 1987 yılında ise Prof. David O’Connor danışmanlığında hazırladığı “The Funerary Establishments of Khufu, Khafra, and Menkaura During the Old Kingdom” başlıklı teziyle doktora derecesini tamamlamıştır.

1987’de Mısır’a dönen Hawass, Giza, Saqqara ve Bahariya Ovası’nın Genel Direktörü (Director General) olarak atanmıştır. Bu dönemde Khafre Piramidi (Giza) ve Djoser Piramidi’nin (Saqqara) restorasyon projelerini başlatmış, 1989’da Sfenks Restorasyon Projesi’nin direktörlüğünü üstlenmiştir.

Öne Çıkan Keşifler ve Saha Çalışmaları (1990’lar–Günümüz)

Hawass’ın saha çalışmaları geniş bir yelpazeyi kapsar; aşağıda başlıca keşif ve projeler kronolojik olarak verilmiştir:

• 1990: Giza’da “pyramid builders” (piramid inşaatçıları) mezarlarının keşfi. Bu çalışma, piramit inşaatında görevli zanaatkâr ve işçi topluluğuna dair somut kanıtlar sunulmasını içerir.
• 1991: Khufu’nun (Keops) uydu piramidi (satellite pyramid) keşfi; ayrıca Khafre piramidi ile Sfenks arasındaki Osiris şaftının bulunması.
• 1993: Khufu piramidinin içinde bakır saplı bir kapı (door with copper handles) gibi özgün bulguların raporlanması.
• 1996: Bahariya Ovası’nda “Valley of the Golden Mummies” (Altın Mumyalar Vadisi) keşfi; Bahariya vali mezarları, eşleri ve aile fertlerine ait mezarların ortaya çıkarılması.
• 1997: Menkaure (Menkare) piramidinin korunması ve restorasyonunun direktörlüğü.
• 1998: Giza’da Khufu’yu ve kraliyet nekropollerini kapsayan çalışmalar; aynı yıl devlet kademelerinde yükselerek Giza Anıtları için Devlet Müsteşarlığı (Undersecretary) görevine getirildi.
• 2000’ler: 2000’lerin başında (2002) Suprem Council of Antiquities (SCA) Genel Sekreteri (Secretary General) oldu. 2005’te Egyptian Mummy Project (EMP)’i başlattı; modern forensik teknikler (CT, DNA) kullanılarak kraliyet mumyaları üzerinde kimliklendirme ve adli tıp çalışmaları yürütüldü. EMP kapsamında:
• Hatshepsut’un mumyası ve Tutankhamun ailesine ait bireylerin tanımlanması gerçekleştirildi,
• Ramses III’ün ölüm nedenine ilişkin bulgular (suikast/”harem komplosu”) elde edildi.

• Giza’daki robotik araştırmalar: Hawass yönetimindeki bilimsel ekip, Khufu’nun Büyük Piramidi içindeki “gizli kapıları” araştırmak üzere robotik donanım kullandı; ayrıca Scan Pyramids projesinin bilimsel komitesine başkanlık etti.
• Valley of the Kings: Hawass, Mısır’ın yönettiği ilk kazıyı burada organize ederek KV 53 gibi “kayıp” mezarların yeniden keşfine katkıda bulundu; Seti I’in mezarındaki labirent-tünel gizemini aydınlattı.
• Yeni piramitler / tumulus ve anıt keşifleri: Khufu’ya ait uydu piramidi, Teti’nin annesine ait piramit gibi daha önce bilinmeyen veya yeniden saptanan yapılar; ayrıca Saqqara’da 5. ve 6. Hanedan kraliçelerine ait piramitlerin yeniden tanımlanması.
• 2021: Luxor’da “Dazzling Aten / Lost Golden City” (Amenhotep III’e ait) keşfi; aynı yıl ayrıca Teti piramidi çevresinde yeni bulgular ve Ramses II mezarına ilişkin restorasyon çalışmaları yer aldı.
• 2023–2025: 2023’te Luxor’da 25. Hanedan’a tarihlenen bir kadın mezarlığı, Gisr el-Mudir’de (Gisr el Mudir) kayıp bir piramit ve Thutmose I tapınağının keşfi; 2024–2025’te Gran Egyptian Museum (GEM) ve diğer katalog/sergi yayınları ile saha raporları yayımlandı. Ayrıca Batı Vadisi (West Valley) ve “Valley of the Monkeys” (Maymunlar Vadisi) dahilinde devam eden aramalar, West Valley’de kraliyet atölyelerinin ve olası yeni mezarların araştırılması.

Hawass ayrıca Nil altındaki sualtı kazılarıyla antik dikilitaş ve heykel arayışlarına, Kavalye ve diğer tapınakların kuzey girişlerinin açığa çıkarılmasına ve daha küçük ölçekli ama kronolojik açıdan önemli pek çok arkeolojik keşfe başkanlık etmiştir.

Bilimsel Yöntemler: Mumyalar ve Modern Forensik Uygulamalar

Hawass’ın görev sürecinde yürütülen bilimsel girişimlerden biri Egyptian Mummy Project (EMP) olmuştur. Bu proje, bilgisayarlı tomografi (CT) taramaları, paleoradyolojik incelemeler, DNA analizleri ve antropolojik–patolojik değerlendirmeler aracılığıyla kraliyet mumyalarının kimliklendirilmesi ve ölüm nedenlerinin belirlenmesini amaçlamıştır.

EMP kapsamında gerçekleştirilen araştırmalar, Hatshepsut’un kimliğinin doğrulanması, Tutankhamun hanedanı üyelerinin genetik olarak tanımlanması ve III. Ramses’in ölüm nedeninin adli tıp yöntemleriyle ortaya konması gibi önemli bulgulara ulaşmıştır. Bu sonuçlar, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), British Medical Journal (BMJ), Frontiers in Medicine ve Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography gibi bilimsel dergilerde yayımlanmış; arkeoloji, genetik ve adli tıp alanlarında geniş bir etki oluşturulmuştur.

Kurumsal Görevler, Koruma Programları ve Miras Yönetimi

Hawass idari kariyeri boyunca Mısır’daki miras koruma politikalarının şekillenmesinde aktif rol oynamıştır. Öne çıkan uygulamaları şunlardır:
