The Dumlupınar Disaster was a maritime accident that occurred in the Dardanelles on 4 April 1953, in which 81 naval officers lost their lives. This disaster, resulting from a collision between the Swedish-flagged freighter Naboland and the Turkish Navy submarine Dumlupınar, was not merely a technical maritime accident; it was also a national tragedy and a matter of collective memory. Following this accident, 4 April was declared ‘Memorial Day for Naval Martyrs’.
